Abstract

Background: The aim of this study was to assess the association between sex, level of education and health-related quality of life after total hip replacement.

Methods: In this prospective observational registry study data were obtained from Statistics Sweden and the Swedish Hip Arthroplasty Register.

Results: All patients reported improved health-related quality of life one year after total hip replacement. Women had significantly lower post-operative health-related quality of life (β = -0.038, p < 0.001). Upper secondary (β = 0.006, p < 0.05) and higher education (β = 0.028, p <0.001) was associated with higher postoperative health-related quality of life.

Discussion: One possible reason for the observed disparities is the well-known difference in attitudes to care-seeking between women and men and between groups in the population from different socioeconomic backgrounds.

Conclusion: Our study implies that providing additional support to patients at risk for poorer outcomes could lead to a more equitable healthcare in total hip replacement.
