Abstract

Background and Aims: The aim of this study is the revalidation of the Beliefs about Medicine Questionnaire (BMQ) in outpatient gastroenterology clinic patients, in Greece.

Methods: A cohort of 163 patients diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease (CD) was included in the study, with the majority of them being in the remission phase. Diagnosis of IBD was established using standard diagnostic criteria. Statistical analysis included descriptive statistics and frequency analysis, Pearson's correlation and analysis of variance (ANOVA).

Results: Internal consistency of the BMQ validated with Cronbach's α, being 0.757 in overall and 0.795 and 0.691 for the specific and general parts, respectively. The data adequacy for factor analysis was determined with Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) measure > 0.5, while inter-item correlations were found to be significant in all cases.

Conclusions: The Greek version of BMQ presented satisfactory psychometric/measurement properties indicating its reliability for use in patients with IBD who receive care in an outpatient hospital clinic.
