Virtues: foundations for medical ethics?
Abstract
"The Terrorism of Virtue." This was the title of an article published 2012 in the German weekly Die Zeit. The article was about self-proclaimed guardians of virtue who are convinced they always know what is good for their neighbors. Their insights range from advising against smoking to demanding that everyone should follow certain trends. And this brings us directly to our central topic: we follow Aristotle in exploring what is really meant by virtue and whether the virtuous person is in fact a "moralistic terrorist". Our understanding of virtue will then allow us to take a brief look at current issues in medical ethics, in this article and how they relate to the growing movement of person-centered healthcare.
